Dr. Kim Connelly is a nationally recognized Cardiologist and Scientist specializing in echocardiography, cardiovascular MRI, and the effects of diabetes on cardiac function and ventricular remodeling. He leads a basic research lab at the Keenan Research Centre at St. Michael’s Hospital, focusing on pathological extracellular matrix accumulation and translating findings into human therapies.
He has an H-index of 65 and i10-index of 206 (Google Scholar), with his work cited >14,293 times. He has published in prestigious journals such as NEJM, Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation Research, Diabetes, Cell Metabolism, and Lancet Endocrinology and Diabetes. His research spans diverse areas, including clinical guidelines, clinical trials, and preclinical studies, focusing on ventricular remodeling, diabetes, magnetic resonance imaging, and echocardiography. Dr. Connelly serves on the editorial boards of The Canadian Journal of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Diabetology. He has received over $5 million in funding as a Prinicipa Investigator and a Co-Investigator, he has contributed to projects receiving >$20 million in funding from the Ministry of Ontario, HSF, CIHR, CFI, and industry sources.
He has been recognized for his contributions to science by being awarded a HSF clinician scientist award, CIHR New Investigator Award, Early Researcher Award from the Ministry of Ontario, SC Verma Award and the Insulin 100 emerging leader award to celebrate 100 years since the discovery of insulin at University of Toronto, and Canadian Cardiovascular Congress YIA 2012. He is the past chair of the Canadian Cardiovascular guideline and was chair of the macrovascular complication section for Diabetes Canada CPG 2018
Currently, Dr. Connelly is the Executive Director of the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science, Keenan Chair in Research Leadership, Division Head of Cardiology at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto and a Professor of Medicine at University of Toronto.
