Heather is a person with lived experience, comes from a social work background and has a Doctor of Social Sciences. Heather’s research focused on the experiences of patients and caregivers who relocate to access heart transplants. Heather drew on her personal experience as a caregiver who relocated with her husband who was in needed of a heart transplant. After completing her thesis Heather held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia and the University of Northern British Columbia. Heather has continued to work on projects related to heart failure, women’s heart health, patient and caregiver engagement and patient agency.
Heather sits on the Board of the Canadian Transplant Association and is a member of HeartLife Foundation, the Canadian Heart Function Alliance, the Canadian Women’s Heart Alliance and Global Heart Hub. Heather has worked at in the Transplant program at Toronto General Hospital and Cardiovascular Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital. Currently Heather works at the Ottawa Heart Institute as the Patient Engagement Officer for Research.
