Dr. Heshka completed her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) at the University of Ottawa, where she pursued specialty training in internal medicine. During her fellowship, she focused on aspects of cardiometabolic medicine, including cardiology and heart failure, nephrology, hypertension, lipidology, and diabetes management. Prior to her medical degree she completed graduate work in the effects of diet on leptin levels and weight management. She worked as a consultant at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital and practiced cardiology and cardiometabolic medicine at the Ottawa Cardiovascular Centre. She transitioned her practice to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) in 2023. There, she directs the Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy Clinic for the medical optimization of patients with HFrEF. She has been part of the CCS HFrEF Guidelines. She also leads a new Cardiometabolic Prevention Clinic which focuses on optimizing therapy in patients with complex cardiometabolic disorders, and is the lead physician for UOHI's new 1 Million Hearts Initiative. She is the current director of the UOHI Women's Heart Health Clinic. Aside from this, she also provides care for patients in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Clinic and Aorta Clinic. She teaches at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine and is actively involved in ongoing education for primary care physicians and specialists.
