Paul Poirier completed his studies at Université Laval, Quebec, Canada. After earning a bachelor’s degree in physical activity sciences and a master’s degree in experimental medicine focusing on the role of physical training in type 2 diabetes, he pursued medical studies and obtained his MD from Université Laval in 1992. He then completed residencies in internal medicine and cardiology at the same institution, as well as a PhD in experimental medicine investigating the role of exercise in diabetes and the impact of diabetes on exercise tolerance. He subsequently undertook postdoctoral studies at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (Denver, Colorado) in the Division of Endocrinology under the supervision of Dr. Robert H. Eckel. Dr. Poirier is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Université Laval, where he plays a major role in research training and in teaching medical students and residents. A cardiologist with a long-standing interest in diabetes and obesity, he joined the Quebec Heart and Lung Institute in 2000, where he has been the medical lead of the cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation program. His research interests are broad, and he has collaborated on numerous basic and clinical science studies. Dr. Poirier currently chairs the Cardiovascular Promotion and Prevention Committee of the Quebec Association of Cardiologists. He is the author or coauthor of more than 500 scientific papers, 450 abstracts, 30 book chapters, and hundreds of presentations mainly in the fields of exercise, risk factor control, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. He has also chaired the American Heart Association’s Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism Obesity Committee and contributed to Canadian Diabetes, Lipid, and Obesity guideline panels.
