Dr. Leong-Poi is a Professor in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Cardiology and the current Departmental Division Director of Cardiology at the University of Toronto. He is also a Clinician-Scientist, Cardiologist / Echocardiographer, and Medical Director of the Heart, Lung and Vascular
Program at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto. He was Division Head of Cardiology at St. Michael's Hospital from 2011-2022.
Dr. Leong-Poi completed undergraduate and graduate medical training at the University of Toronto, and a Research Fellowship at the University of Virginia. His clinical interests include cardiac imaging, in particular echocardiography, and clinical cardiology with a focus on ischemic heart disease and valvular heart disease. His research focuses on the development of ultrasound targeted gene-based regenerative therapies for cardiovascular diseases. His research has been funded from several granting agencies, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. He is a past president of the Canadian Society of Echocardiography. Dr. Leong-Poi currently serves on the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Cardiology (CJC).
