Dr. Marc Ruel is a graduate of the University of Ottawa, where he obtained his M.D. and Royal College of Canada Certification in Cardiac Surgery, and of Harvard University, where he completed a scholarship in minimally invasive surgery, in laboratory research, and a Masters in Public Health. He is known for having developed the world’s first high-impact series of multi-vessel/multi-arterial Minimally Invasive Coronary Bypass Grafting. Countless surgeons and teams from over the world have visited the University of Ottawa Heart Institute to learn these advanced techniques. Dr. Ruel has performed surgeries as a visiting professor at multiple institutions globally and trained hundreds of learners from every continent. Dr. Ruel is Past President of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS), established in 1946 and one of the most respected medical societies in the world. During his leadership, the CCS secured its first federal funding, developed its Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, launched new public advocacy initiatives addressing COVID, myocarditis, and heart failure, established the Cardiovascular Centres’ Alliance, and initiated its leadership code of conduct. Dr. Ruel serves as the Surgery Editor for the journal Circulation, the world’s premier cardiovascular journal. Throughout Dr. Ruel’s extended 11-year tenure as Chief of Cardiac Surgery in Ottawa and at UOHI, the program massively grew in activity, national outreach (including a new partnership with Newfoundland and Labrador), quality, research and innovation, advanced education, as well as in outside referrals, international reputation, global recruitment, and overall impact. A prolific scholar, Dr. Ruel has published over 500 scientific papers and chapters, authored seven books, and delivered nearly 400 invited lectures. His primary textbook on Cardiac Surgical Techniques is in its Third Edition and has been published in 4 languages. Dr. Ruel has led or partaken in 17 international practice guidelines or consensus statements on cardiovascular care.
