Dr. Jairo Tavares Nunes is an Advanced Echocardiography Fellow at the University Health Network, University of Toronto. He recently completed an Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant, and Mechanical Circulatory Support Fellowship at the same institution, where he also served as the Lead Cardiology Fellow for UHN/Mount Sinai Hospital.
Before his current role, Dr. Nunes completed a Cardiology Clinical & Research Fellowship at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre Clinical Trials and Translation Unit, University Health Network (2022–2024), where he was actively involved in multicentre clinical trials in heart failure and cardiometabolic disease.
Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, Dr. Nunes obtained his medical degree and completed his Internal Medicine and Cardiology residencies at the Heart Institute (InCor), University of São Paulo. He served as Chief Cardiology Resident and later completed an Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation Fellowship at the same institution before moving to Canada to pursue advanced subspecialty and research training.
Dr. Nunes is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in clinical heart failure research at the Heart Institute (InCor), focusing on advanced heart failure, cardiac remodelling, and ischemic cardiomyopathy. His academic interests include improving patient phenotyping and selection for heart failure clinical trials, and integrating artificial intelligence into pragmatic trial design to enhance representativeness and real-world applicability in advanced heart failure research.
