Dr. Jean L. Rouleau served as Director of the Cardiac Program and the Cardiology divisions at UHN and at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto (1999-2003). He was Dean of the University of Montreal's Faculty of Medicine (2003-2010) and championed the development of a patient-partner-public approach to health care education.
He was the Scientific Director of the Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health of the CIHR (2010-2015). He laid the groundwork for the Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR), and helped establish networks focusing on respiration, sleep and circadian rhythm, stroke, atrial fibrillation, vascular health and coagulation.
Dr. Rouleau is presently the Scientific Director of the Canadian Heart Function Alliance, a pan-Canadian, patient-driven, CIHR- and Heart and Stroke-funded research network dedicated to improve the prevention, prediction, treatment and management of heart failure.
His research interest include translational scientific work in ventricular function, post-infarction ventricular remodeling, and neurohormonal activation. His leadership in clinical research culminated in the development of the life-saving medication sacubitril/valsartan, now routinely used to treat patients with chronic heart failure.
He received many awards and prestigious recognitions over the years the Order of Canada and was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.
Dr. Rouleau’s h-index is 139 with 113,841 citations, and 638 scientific articles in journals such as the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine. He presently is an executive committee member of several large clinical trials, and member or chair of a several data safety monitoring committees of clinical trials.
