Workshop Description: The CHRS Spotlight session “CATHETER ABLATION AS FIRST LINE THERAPY IN 2025” will take the form of a plenary session on heart rhythm disorders and will be open to all CCS delegates. The topics selected are relevant for clinical cardiologists as well as for electrophysiologists, although as per the new guidance from the CCC 2025 planning committee, this session will take a "deep dive" into topics within cardiac electrophysiology which will appeal to EP attendance. Each speaker will provide the audience with an up-to-date concise review of their assigned topic. The topics were selected according to the relevance for the CCS and CHRS community and to the field of expertise and research interests of the speakers.
The topics of this session are: (1) Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation as first-line therapy; (2) Ablation of atrial fibrillation at first onset and (3) Catheter ablation of ventricular tachycardia as first-line therapy. The CHRS executive and education committees planned this session. Members of these committees include community and academic cardiologists, electrophysiologists, cardiology residents and allied professionals from diverse practices and experience across Canada. The CHRS education committee is composed of representatives from each of the following regions: British Colombia, Prairies, Ontario, and Quebec. The CHRS executive and education committees have developed an objective and balanced representation of the selected topics that is completely free of third-party influence and/or support. Email discussions took place to assess the needs of new electrophysiologists in the country as well as those of clinical cardiologists, trainees and internists in the field of arrhythmia management.
Interactive and Engagement Activities
Description: After the 3 didactic lectures, there will be an open panel discussion and Q&A for the audience. We will potentially offer the use of the ARS for the panel discussion.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session participants will be able to:
- Identify patient characteristics that may influence the decision to pursue catheter ablation early in the course of atrial fibrillation
- Identify contemporary techniques and technological advancements that have improved the safety, and efficiency of catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation
- Understand the benefits of early intervention with catheter ablation in patients with new-onset AF.
- Understand the clinical evidence supporting catheter ablation of VT as first-line therapy over antiarrhythmic drugs.
