Kathia Abdoun, PhD Candidate
Faculté de médecine - Université Laval
Kathia Abdoun is a PhD student in Clinical and Biomedical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine, Université Laval. She conducts her research at the Research Centre of the Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Québec (CRIUCPQ-ULaval) under the supervision of Dr. Marie-Annick Clavel
Her research focuses on the impact of women's unique aspects on the progression of aortic stenosis. By exploring factors often overlooked, such as menopause, pregnancy and its complications, as well as the use of hormone replacement therapy, her research aims to fill the current gaps in understanding the links between women specific risk factors across lifespan and aortic valve disease. This research will highlight the importance of including these risk factors in the evaluation of women with valvular heart diseases.
She is also interested in sex differences in aortic stenosis. Her aim is to contribute to a better understanding of sex differences in this condition and to improve prevention and management strategies tailored to each sex.
Kathia is actively involved in clinical research, particularly in the ARBAS randomized clinical trial, which is evaluating the effect of angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) on the progression of aortic stenosis. She is also interested in the impact of sex on the effectiveness of this treatment, emphasizing that management and treatment should be tailored according to sex to improve clinical outcomes.
