PhD Candidate
University of Toronto, Canada
Priya Mistry is a third-year PhD candidate in Dr. Jason Fish’s laboratory at the University of Toronto. Her doctoral research examines how breast cancer primes the cardiovascular system for chemotherapy-related cardiotoxicity, with the aim of identifying mechanisms and potential biomarkers to predict which patients may be at higher risk of chemotherapy-induced cardiac dysfunction.
She earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Biomedical Science at the University of Guelph. Priya’s interest in cardiovascular research began while working as a research assistant with Dr. Andre Lamy in the cardiac surgery at Hamilton Health Sciences. She went on to complete her Master’s degree in Dr. Tami Martino’s lab, where her work on circadian biology, the gut microbiome, and post-myocardial infarction healing was published in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology (2020) and recognized as one of the journal’s Top Papers in 2020.
Priya’s work has been supported by several scholarships and awards, including a Canadian Institutes of Health Research Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship (Master’s) and a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Doctoral). She also serves as Graduate Student Council Co-Chair for the Canadian Cardio-Oncology Network, helping to foster collaboration in the field across Canada.
Her research career has spanned both clinical and basic science settings, providing her with a unique translational perspective that bridges molecular discovery with patient care. She is passionate about using these experiences to translate key findings in the lab into strategies that improve patient outcomes.
