Joseph F. Sabik III, MD is the Oliver H. Payne Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Surgeon-in-Chief and Vice-President of Surgical Operations for the University Hospitals Health System.
Dr. Sabik earned a BS in Life Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his MD from Harvard. He completed his surgical internship/residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and thoracic and cardiovascular surgery residency at Cleveland Clinic. He was appointed to the Cleveland Clinic Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery as a staff physician (1996) and named chair of The Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (2008). During his tenure, he held the Sheik bin Rashid al Maktoum Distinguished Chair in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and was Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. He was named Professor and Department Chair of Surgery at University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve (2016), and awarded the Oliver Payne Professorship in Surgery (2021).
He's widely published, including Journal of the American Medical Association, New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Annals of Thoracic Surgery and authored many textbook chapters. He's a frequent lecturer, whose specialty interests include surgery for valvular heart disease, coronary artery disease, and less invasive cardiac surgery.
He's President of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He's served on the Program Committees for the AATC, the STS, the ACC and the AHA. He's a member of the University Hospitals Health System Board and Secretary of CTSNet. He has previously served as served as Secretary of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Secretary of the Thoracic Surgery Foundation, Treasurer of CTSNet, chair of Workforce on Evidence-Based Surgery for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and membership chair for American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
