Workshop Description: Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) and elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] are two of the most common inherited lipid disorders encountered in clinical practice. In Canada, approximately 1 in 311 individuals have FH and 1 in 5 have high Lp(a). These conditions significantly increase the risk of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, yet both remain under-diagnosed and under-treated. There have been significant advances in the options for treatment for these conditions. Nonetheless, there is a need for the development of systems of care to increase the identification of patients with these diseases, particularly in specific patient populations including children, females, and Indigenous patients.
The principal objective of this workshop is to highlight recent developments in screening, diagnosis and treatment of FH and elevated Lp(a). We will review key recommendations and uptakes since the 2021 CCS Guidelines for the Management of Dyslipidemia, the 2022 CCS Pediatric Cardiology Clinical Practice Update on Dyslipidemia in Children, as well as the 2018 CCS Position Statement on FH, and compare them with other international guidelines. The workshop will include interactive presentations by a patient with lived experience, clinician-scientists, a pediatric cardiologist, and an Indigenous clinician. Participants will gain insight into management approaches for special populations and learn about the latest developments in therapies for these conditions.
In addition, members of the FH and Lp(a) Canada Registries will present on efforts to improve detection of individuals with inherited lipid disorders, as well as initiatives and resources available for patients and healthcare professionals. The forum will promote patient advocacy, raise awareness, and emphasize the importance of early screening, treatment, and cardiovascular disease prevention.
Workshop outline:
-Ms. Zobaida Al-Baldawi will share her personal journey and patient perspective
-Dr. Liam Brunham will review recommendations for FH screening and treatment
-Dr. George Thanassoulis will discuss Lp(a) screening and therapeutic considerations
-Dr. Iulia Iatan will discuss sex-specific considerations in FH and high Lp(a) over the life course
-Dr. Michael Khoury will outline treatment approaches for children with FH and Lp(a)
-Dr. Miles Marchand will explore lipid screening approaches in Indigenous communities
-A panel discussion will address national initiatives, available programs, and practical resources for patients and healthcare providers
