Workshop Description: This symposium is designed to inform cardiovascular practitioners, researchers, educators and health-care stakeholders about the latest developments in the evolving population epidemic of obesity. It is well-known that the prevalence of obesity has reached epic proportions, affecting around 30% of the Canadian population aged 18 and over. Obesity increases the risks of many cardiovascular conditions, including atherosclerosis, dyslipidemia, heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Combating obesity is an important challenge for the health care system, for the public system including schools, the government, health-focused agencies and for the public in general. World-renowned speakers in the session will deal with selected topics like 1) surgical approaches to obesity and associated health benefits; 2) the Obesity Paradox; 3) the use, benefits and indications for newer obesity-combating drugs like GLP1 agonists and the evolving role of double and triple therapy; 4) the value and advisability of various public health measures. The format will include formal presentations, a panel discussion and audience interaction. Links will be provided to selected relevant readings in the area. This session will be of interest to a broad range of medical personnel, trainees, stakeholders and health professionals.
