Workshop Description: Cardiovascular trainees will receive a comprehensive overview of the HeartMate 3 (HM3) LVAD, covering its indications, contraindications, mechanism, physiological effects, and complications. Participants will also learn approaches for weaning from mechanical circulatory support and managing device alarms or malfunctions. As well, trainees will have the opportunity to practice hands-on apical coring and sewing ring placement on porcine hearts.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session participants will be able to:

understand the indications, contraindications, mechanism of action, physiological profiles, and complications of HeartMate 3 (HM3);
be familiar with weaning from mechanical circulatory support and troubleshooting alarms and malfunctions; and
simulation of apical coring and sewing ring placement on porcine hearts.
