Workshop Description: The number of Canadians living with valvular heart disease (VHD) continues to rise. About 2.5% of the population has VHD, with even greater proportions reached in the elderly population, where 13% of individuals above the age of 75 are affected. It is thus imperative to the general cardiologists to be well-equipped to assess associated risk and ensure timely and comprehensive care for this commonly encountered problem. VHD is a broad umbrella term that encompasses a wide variety of pathology. We have therefore carefully selected 3 special populations that present unique challenges.
First, we will discuss the timely intervention in young adults with VHD, with a focus on how to select the right valve for the right patient, as young adults face unique challenges with rapid deterioration of bioprosthesis, prolonged exposure to anticoagulation, need for re-intervention, among others. Then, we will further nuance our discussion to describe the risk associated with valve disease during pregnancy and in the postpartum period, and share examples of adequate pre-conception risk assessment to best inform patients. Lastly, we will discuss valve care in the very elderly, who are burdened by multimorbidity, frailty, and in whom novel advances in percutaneous interventions offer promising avenues.
To achieve these ambitious objectives, we have recruited a multi-disciplinary team of experts to guide our discussions. Our planning committee members and presenters include clinical cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, echocardiographers, cardiologists with expertise in cardio-obstetrics and valve disease, as well as trainees.
