Workshop Description: Pericardial disease presents a broad spectrum of challenges in both diagnosis and management. This dynamic Spotlight Session, presented by the Canadian Society of Echocardiography at the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Congress, will explore the critical role echocardiography plays in addressing these complexities. Designed for general cardiologists, imaging specialists, and surgeons, the session will delve into real-world cases, offering valuable insights across four key areas: diagnosis, imaging, medical management, and surgical intervention.
The session will feature a series of four talks, each highlighting a unique expert perspective on managing pericardial disease:
Talk 1: Case Presentation of Effusive-Constrictive Pericarditis
This opening case, presented by a trainee, will introduce the challenging diagnosis of effusive-constrictive pericarditis.
Talk 2: Acute Pericarditis and Pericardial Effusion
In this presentation, common clinical scenarios involving pericardial disease will be discussed. Focus will be on identifying key echocardiographic features to differentiate between pericardial fluid accumulation, tamponade, and constrictive pericarditis, while also addressing overlapping presentations.
Talk 3: Evolving to Effusive-Constrictive Pericarditis
Building on the first case, this talk will explore the progression of acute pericarditis into effusive-constrictive pericarditis. Emphasis will be placed on the role of multimodality imaging and clinical decision-making, particularly around when to introduce steroids and other medical interventions in these complex cases.
Talk 4: Constriction and Intervention
This session will cover the surgical management of pericardial disease, including indications, techniques, and outcomes. Topics include pericardial anatomy, common disorders like pericarditis and tamponade, and when surgery is needed. The session will discuss surgical options, risks, and real-world case studies. Long-term prognosis, recovery, and challenges such as surgical timing and high-risk patients will also be addressed. Emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach, the session will explore emerging techniques and future research, helping participants tailor surgical strategies for optimal outcomes.
This Spotlight session will offer a comprehensive examination of echocardiographic features, medical management, and intervention strategies. Whether you're an imaging specialist seeking advanced interpretative insights or a clinician refining your approach to pericardial disease, this session will provide valuable knowledge for all attendees.
Join us for an engaging, case-driven discussion aimed at enhancing your understanding of pericardial disease and its management.
